Both treatments involve injections, but botulinum toxin (Nuceiva® or Dysport®) relaxes muscle movement that results in wrinkles while dermal fillers, is hyaluronic acid (Restylane®) and simply plumps out and smooth wrinkles. Sometimes, these treatments are more effective when combined.

The length of time a treatment lasts relies on a number of factors, including treatment area, skin elasticity, injection technique, the type of filler used and the patient’s metabolism. Restylane states their products last from 6 to 18+ months depending on the product selected and location.
Pain is very individualized and dependent on one’s tolerance to pain. For dermal filler procedures, we apply a numbing cream with temporary freezing ingredients. The filler syringes also contain the same temporary freezing ingredients so that most patients report that the discomfort was minimal. Lastly, we have a unique vibrating device that is able to effectively dull the sensation of the injections.
Yes, if needed or desired, a special reversal agent called “hyaluronidase” can be injected to dissolve the filler. Otherwise, over time (months to years) it will break down on its own.
Due to the risks of this procedure, we believe it is best to leave this technique to a plastic surgeon.
